Why do people have metaphysical and mystical experiences? This new series sets out to answer that question. Welcome to the introductory episode. We’re inviting you to be an active part of this exploration as we delve into the purpose of these experiences and what they tell us about humanity’s future and potential. We seek answers to this question from ancient wisdom traditions as well as modern science. Listen in as we focus on the role and meaning of metaphysical and mystical experiences from varying perspectives, across a broad range of human experience and ways of knowing.
Many modern-day mystics have been in the closet. It’s easy to understand why scientists have chosen not to talk openly about spiritual experiences, but what about spiritual leaders? Pastors? And what about the everyday folks on main street or sitting in the pews of those churches? Where do we go to navigate this fascinating terrain, share transpersonal, metaphysical, and mystical experiences to better understand the evolution of consciousness? Join Drs. Julie Krull and Paul Mills as they set out to “normalize the non-ordinary” and open the closet door.
Have you ever wondered, “Who am I? Why am I here? Where did I come from? Where am I going when I leave and how do I get there?” Our guest today, an internationally recognized authority on human spiritual potential, transformation, and ascension, says the quest to answer these questions triggers our natural spiritual abilities for transformation and evolution, both as individuals and as a species. Transformation leads to a sense of wholeness, holiness, and completion that changes our bodies, raises us beyond human, and enables us to “walk with the angels” in the sacred realms. This is ascension. Join us for this riveting conversation.

Transcendent experiences like these are becoming so increasingly common that it makes sense to finally claim and honor the next level of consciousness we’re expanding into. Sharing grounded wisdom and our intimate encounters with this greater reality, the Common Sentience book series open hearts, affirms our innate essence, and transforms our world. Rev. Ariel Patricia joins us to talk about our sacred stories and why it’s important that we share them now.

Mystical, transpersonal, and metaphysical experiences are often described as beautiful, magical, life-changing events that enhance our lives in positive ways. But sometimes a spiritual experience can turn into a spiritual emergency or worse, a psychotic break. As a young adult, our guest, Patricia Muehsam, M.D., found herself locked in a psychiatric ward after talking about her own spiritual experiences. Now, a pioneer in the synthesis of science, holistic health, and contemporary spirituality, Dr. Muehsam has a groundbreaking book, Beyond Medicine: A Physician’s Revolutionary Prescription for Achieving Absolute Health and Finding Inner Peace.
About Dr. Patricia A. Muehsam
Patricia A. Muehsam, MD, a pioneer in the synthesis of science, holistic health, and contemporary spirituality, has distinguished herself as a practitioner, educator, research scientist, and author. Dr. Muehsam has been an influential force in shaping the landscape of healthcare options available today. As a thought leader, Muehsam forged new ground that contributed to the establishment of the Office of Alternative Medicine at the National Institutes of Health, now the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health.
As an educator, she founded the Association of American Medical Colleges’ first initiative in alternative and complementary medicine, leading medical schools throughout the United States to add courses in the field. Her original bioelectromagnetics laboratory research at The Mount Sinai School of Medicine investigated distant healer phenomena, Qigong, and homeopathy. Since then, she has studied trance medium, spiritual, and psychic healing phenomena, as well as the links between consciousness and health. Dr. Muehsam’s journey has been marked by both extraordinary personal challenges and extraordinary openings, all of which have informed that journey and been an inspiration for her professional activities. She has been a patient, many times over. She has experienced catastrophic illness in her family and in her own life. And she’s born witness to cures that defied conventional medical thinking. Inspired by her personal experiences, she pursued training in acupuncture, homeopathy, Ayurveda, mindbody medicine, yoga, energy medicine, and functional medicine, and in 2008, she founded Transformational Medicine TM , a whole person approach to healing, wellness, and living. Her services include health consultations, mind-body healing sessions, courses, retreats, and communities of support.
Muehsam’s groundbreaking book, Beyond Medicine: A Physician’s Revolutionary Prescription for Achieving Absolute Health and Finding Inner Peace, has been hailed by Larry Dossey, MD as the “only health and healing book you may ever need.” A musician since early childhood, Dr. Muehsam plays piano, flute, and sings. Nowadays, she mostly sings — jazz, gospel, and classical choral music. She resides in New York City with Benjamin, her adopted Golden Retriever and very wise spiritual advisor.
“Imagine if we all knew for certain there was something more than this world and this single lifetime, and that God exists, and that we are loved beyond measure by God.” What would our world be like if we all had transpersonal, metaphysical, and mystical experiences? And what if we could share these Spiritually Transformative Experiences with others. Would it create a global spiritual revolution? What would it tell us about humanity’s potential and future? Join Drs. Julie Krull and Paul J. Mills with their guest, author John Audette, as they explore whether mystical experiences can catalyze a spiritual revolution.

DESCRIPTION: Did you know there are real and cumulative spiritual benefits of meditation? Mystical experiences, different states of consciousness, heightened awareness, guidance, inspiration, and awakening experiences are just a few. Sometimes meditation induces the profound and unimaginable, and sometimes a prolonged practice fundamentally changes you. Sister Dr. Jenna, author of Meditation, says: “This is what happens when you consistently meditate. You are inspired to become increasingly kind, generous, loving, and less dictated by the ego. It happens subtly over time, like a rose blooming inside you, eventually sharing its fragrance with anyone who comes in contact with you.” In this episode of Mainstreet Mystics, we explore meditation and ask two experts the bigger questions: what insights do we have from ancient wisdom traditions, modern science, and lived experience, and why do people have transpersonal, metaphysical and mystical experiences as a result of meditation?

When you think about “healing,” what do you imagine? Does something leap in your heart or stir in your soul? For many healers, the most profound cases are when the veils between heaven and earth dissolve and the designing intelligence of the universe steps in. During healing, sometimes the physical and spiritual worlds unexpectantly come together and transcended all rational knowing and expectations. With our guests, Oscar Miro-Quesada Solevo and Dr. Shamini Jain, we explore today’s shaman, who leaves new footprints on paths of psychic awareness and spiritual wisdom that are more than 70,000 years old. Shamanism is a tradition of healing, power, and wisdom that sees all life as interconnected and sacred. The process of shamanic awakening is as vast as the universe itself. Physical and spiritual worlds blend with one another, and the shaman’s path lies in attaining a life of harmony with both.

Professional credibility. Have you ever had your credibility challenged, particularly by sharing the truth of your real-life lived experience? Many scientists and academics have been forced to live very separate personal and professional lives, for fear of their professional credibility being challenged and even losing their jobs and reputation, or worse. Hopefully, all of that is beginning to change. The Universe may be up to something! Two books about the spiritual lives of scientists were published just three months apart. Neither award-winning author knew the other or that they were writing their books. Join co-host, Dr. Paul J. Mills, author of Science, Being and Becoming: The Spiritual Lives of Scientists, and guest, Dr. Marjorie Woollcott, author of Spiritual Awakenings: Scientists and Academics Describe Their Experiences, as we explore this important topic!
About our Guest
Marjorie Woollacott, Ph.D., is an Emeritus Professor of Human Physiology, and member of the Institute of Neuroscience, at the University of Oregon. She was chair of the Human Physiology Department for seven years. In addition to teaching courses on neuroscience and rehabilitation, she taught courses on complementary and alternative medicine and meditation. She is Research Director for the International Association of Near-Death Studies (IANDS) and is President of the Academy for the Advancement of Postmaterialist Sciences (AAPS). Woollacott graduated magna cum laude from the University of Southern California and was elected to membership in Phi Beta Kappa. Woollacott has received over 7.2 million dollars in research funding for her research in child development, aging, rehabilitation medicine and most recently, meditation. Her areas of expertise include: 1) changes in attentional performance skills and underlying neural networks associated with the mental training of meditation and tai chi; 2) the phenomenon of spiritually transformative experiences, including near-death experiences, 3) the development of balance and attentional abilities in children and factors leading to loss of balance function in aging, and in patients with movement disorders, 4) the design of assessment and treatment strategies to improve balance and attentional abilities. These include testing the efficacy of alternative forms of therapy such as tai chi and meditation for improving both attention and balance and gait abilities in patient populations; and 5) the development of musical performance skills in musicians.
Woollacott has published more than 200 scientific articles and written or co-edited eight books. She is the co-author, with Dr. Anne Shumway-Cook of the textbook for health care professionals, titled: Motor Control: Translating Research into Clinical Practice, in its 6th edition (2021). Her latest book, Infinite Awareness (2015) (winner of eight awards, including the 2017 Parapsychological Association Book Award, Eric Hoffer Book Award and the Nautilus Book Award) pairs Woollacott’s research as a neuroscientist with her self-revelations about the mind’s spiritual power. Between the scientific and spiritual worlds, she breaks open the definition of human consciousness to investigate the existence of a non-physical and infinitely powerful mind.
In these times of transition—”the dawning of a new sun”—the ancestors are here working hard to maintain balance and harmony in the world. Ancestors mean more than simply generations of ancestors who have come before us. Humanity is the youngest of all our ancestors. What does this mean? Author, Mindahi Bastida, explains, “We are not alone, and we have never been alone. Our ancestors are speaking to us, watching us, and guiding us. When you go to a place where you really feel that connection, you need to follow your feelings and let that connection unfold. You can then receive what is meant to be received by your body, your soul, and your spirit.” Join us with Bastida, and integrative family physician, Dr. Joe Tafur, and we explore Ancestors, and what they teach us about humanity, our future, and our potential.

JOE TAFUR MD’s interest in complementary and alternative approaches to health management took root in 1997, at the Pacific College of Oriental Medicine. It deepened during medical school at the University of California, San Diego (UCSD), continued during his Family Medicine residency at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), and has become the primary focus of his medical career.
After his residency, Dr. Tafur completed a two-year Post-Doctoral Research Fellowship at the UCSD Department of Psychiatry. While working as a Family Physician in the U.S., he began exploring indigenous medicine in South America. In 2011, he helped to found Nihue Rao Centro Espiritual, a traditional healing center in the Peruvian Upper Amazon. At Nihue Rao, Dr. Tafur underwent traditional apprenticeship in Traditional Amazonian Plant Medicine and Shipibo curanderismo.
In 2017, he published his book The Fellowship of the River: A Medical Doctor’s Exploration into Traditional Amazonian Plant Medicine. Highly-acclaimed with a foreword written by Dr. Gabor Mate, the book describes Dr. Tafur’s unique journey into spiritual healing work, his years of study in the jungle forest, and the power of nature to heal complaints that have widely evaded Western medical approaches.
Together with a team of world-class colleagues, Dr. Tafur started Modern Spirit, a 501c3 nonprofit organization dedicated to demonstrating the value of spiritual healing in modern healthcare. In addition to education and community-building projects, the organization is currently focused on the Modern Spirit Epigenetics Project, a groundbreaking and now funded substudy of the MAPS MDMA-assisted Psychotherapy research trial.
In 2019, Dr. Tafur began to work with his colleagues Dr. Amalia Baca ND and Ray Baca through the Ocotillo Center for Integrative Medicine. He is now also working with Daytryp Health as an advisor and starting work with Ketamine-Assisted Therapy.
Dr. Tafur also continues to lead Journeys to Latin America, where he guides small groups in a comprehensive experience of Traditional Amazonian Plant Medicine and Ayahuasca curanderismo. Dr. Tafur is particularly interested in education. At the still-thriving Nihue Rao, he has supervised indigenous learning opportunities for a number of U.S. medical students and therapists and is now bringing groups to traditional education in Colombia as well.
Building on the ideas presented in his book and working to bridge the paradigms of modern science and traditional healing, Dr. Tafur has been Speaking at conferences across the globe, as well as at a number of medical schools, including the University of Arizona’s Center for Integrative Medicine, UCSD, Yale, Southwestern College of Naturopathic Medicine, and the Pacific College of Oriental Medicine.
